Upcoming Live Talk - The Great Demonstration - 30th March - Newcastle on Tyne, UK

Created on: 2025-03-10

23rd March is an important day in medical history.

I refer not to the start of UK lockdowns in 2020, but to something much earlier.

On March 23rd 1885 - 140 years before the day of this talk - 'The Great Demonstration' took place.

At this time, 80-100,000 gathered from around the UK in Leicester to protest against compulsory vaccination, which had been in place in England for over 30 years.

Protest against compulsory vaccination. black and white photo of a demonstration. No photo exists of The Great Demonstration, but above is a photo of a protest in Canada with similar goals.

How did the demonstration play out? Why were the public so animated on this issue? Who were the leaders of this movement? What were their goals?

This is a pivotal date in medical and legal history for the UK - and yet it has been all but erased from our collective memory.

In this talk, we will delve into the forgotten history of vaccination, from its beginnings, to the Great Demonstration, and the consequences it set in motion.

Details:

  • Date: Sunday 30th March 2025
  • Time: 3-4pm
  • City: Newcastle upon Tyne, England
  • Location: Earthlings Cafe, 94 Buckingham St., NE4 5QR
  • Directions: from the city centre, go up Westgate Road, pass the motorbike shops, at the lights turn right onto Buckingham St. Earthlings is on the left.
  • Price: £4 if booked in advance, £5 on the day itself.

If you haven't been to Earthlings before, it's a lovely vegan cafe on the outskirts of town, and a place with lots of cultural goings on. Definitely a place to know.

This is an in-real-life event - there are no plans to broadcast it. However, Newcastle is a lovely city with lots of history, a vibrant nightlife, and an international airport. Just sayin' ;-).

Spaces are limited so pre-booking is recommended. I am in discussions as to how booking will be arranged. To be among the first to receive details when sorted, be sure to be on the mailing list.

- Antony

UPDATE: talk this was originally scheduled for 23rd March, however, due to unforeseen circumstances has been postponed to the 30th.
